If you're new to AFCON, don't worry. Here's the easiest way to understand how the tournament works.
The Group Stage
24 countries divided into 6 groups (A through F)
Each group has 4 teams
Every team plays three matches (one against each team in their group)
How do teams qualify for the next round?
Top 2 teams from each group move on (that's 12 teams)
Plus the 4 best third-placed teams (this is crucial, even if you finish third, you're not necessarily out)
Total teams moving forward: 16
Points system:
3 points for a win
1 point for a draw
0 points for a loss
The Knockout Stage
From this point, every match is do-or-die. Winner moves on. Loser goes home.
Rounds include:
Round of 16 (16 teams to become 8 teams )
Quarter-finals (8 teams to become 4 teams)
Semi-finals (4 teams to become 2 teams)
Bronze match (3rd place playoff)
Final (for the ultimate glory)
If a knockout game ends in a draw:
30 minutes of extra time is played (two 15-minute halves)
If still tied, penalties decide the winner
